Have you ever been confused by street signs in 天美传媒? Here鈥檚 how to stop someone and ask for directions.
First of all, you need to say,
鈥淪cusi, signore / signora鈥︹ or 鈥淪cusate鈥 if you are stopping a group of people.
Then you can just say the name of the place you want to go to:
鈥淪cusi, signora, il centro, per favore?鈥 [鈥淓xcuse me, signora, how do I get to the centre of town?鈥漖
If you are familiar with the grammar of Italian prepositions, you can impress the person by using them:
鈥淪cusi, signore, per andare alla Piazza della Signoria, per favore?鈥 [鈥淓xcuse me, how do I get to the Piazza della Signoria?鈥漖
If you want to go to the Cathedral, you can say,
鈥淧er andare al Duomo, per favore?鈥
But 鈥淪cusi, signore, il Duomo, per favore?鈥 will get you understood and is fine.
You can also say,
鈥淒ov鈥櫭ㄢ?鈥 [鈥淲here is鈥?] or 鈥淒ove sono鈥?鈥 [鈥淲here are鈥
For example, in a bar you might ask,
鈥淒ov鈥櫭 il bagno, per favore?鈥 [鈥淲here鈥檚 the bathroom, please?鈥漖
In the street, you might ask,
鈥淒ove sono i negozi, per favore?鈥 [鈥淲here are the shops, please?鈥漖
If you are not sure if a certain place is near, you can ask,
鈥淐鈥櫭 un / una [name of shop or type of building] qui vicino?鈥 [鈥淚s there a 鈥. near here?鈥漖
For example:
鈥淐鈥櫭 un ristorante qui vicino?鈥 [鈥淚s there a restaurant near here?鈥漖
鈥淐鈥櫭 una famacia qui vicino?鈥 [鈥淚s there a pharmacy near here?鈥漖
Of course, it is no good being able to ask for directions if you can鈥檛 understand the answer! The trick here, as with all listening, is to listen for key phrases in the response, such as:
A sinistra 鈥 on the left
Diritto / sempre diritto 鈥 straight on
La prima strada 鈥 the first street
La seconda strada 鈥 the second street
Al primo semaforo 鈥 at the first traffic lights
Al secondo semaforo 鈥 at the second traffic lights
Vicino a 鈥 near
Accanto a 鈥 next to
Di fronte a 鈥 opposite
To ask if something is far away, you say,
鈥溍 lontano?鈥
You will probably hear a response like,
鈥 A centro metri鈥 [鈥 A hundred metres away鈥漖
If you are not sure of the instructions you hear, it is a good idea to try to repeat the important part:
鈥淪empre diritto, poi la prima strada a destra.鈥 [鈥淪traight on, then the first street on the right.鈥漖
Don鈥檛 worry, because Italians like to help people and they are patient. And they will use lots of indications with their hands!
