Every Sunday until November 10, visitors to Siena can explore the charming Tuscan town following in the footsteps of the ancient pilgrims along the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrim route from France to Rome.
Called #SienaFrancigena, the urban trekking begins at Porta Camollia, the point where the Via Francigena enters Siena, with a view of the Torre del Mangia. The itinerary touches on several little-known sites, including the Fontanello in the Contrada dell鈥橧strice (Porcupine district) and the Church of Santa Maria in Portico in Fontegiusta, where a whalebone donated by Christopher Columbus is kept. The route continues until the Santa Maria della Scala complex, Europe鈥檚 largest hospital in the Middle Ages.
After the visit of the complex, participants can pick up the 鈥淧ilgrim鈥檚 Credential鈥, a sort of passport for those traveling along the Via Francigena.
The itinerary ends at Porta Romana and Orto de鈥 Pecci, where trekkers can enjoy a breathtaking view over Siena and a lunch of typical local products.
