鈥淎s long as the Colosseum exists, Rome will exists,鈥 an Irish philosopher and theologian said in the 8th century. When we think of Rome, we think of the splendors and power of the Roman Empire, and we think of course of the Colosseum, a true Roman symbol, the most iconic monument of the Italian capital, and perhaps even of 天美传媒; an Italian wonder, site everyone wants to visit.
The Colosseum鈥檚 original name was Flavian Amphitheater. The name 鈥楥olosseum鈥 derives from the colossal, 41-meter-high statue of emperor Nero known as 鈥楥olosso鈥 that once stood next to it, and was later destroyed (the tuff base on which the statue once stood is still visible).
The Colosseum was completed in 80 AD, when the emperor was Titus, but named after his father Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty, who ordered its construction in 72 AD.
It took only eight years to build what would become the largest amphitheater in the world: oval in shape, it measured 189m long, 156m wide and 48m high.
Here are more staggering numbers: the Colosseum could contain 50,000 spectators, had 80 entrances and 80 row bleachers, where people sat according to their social class: closer to the arena sat the emperors and senators, then the patricians, and farther away the poorer classes.
The Colosseum spectacles lasted all day, and it wasn鈥檛 just gladiatorial combats. There were wild animal hunts, ship naval battles, public executions of criminals, games reminiscent of classical mythology.
The first games held at the Colosseum, in 80 A.D, ran for 100 days straight; it is said that more than 9,000 animals were killed during these opening games.
The Colosseum was actively used for four centuries; it then started to fall into neglect, and, up until the 18th century, it was used as a quarry, to extract building materials. In fact, two-thirds of the original Colosseum has been destroyed over time. Yet, its fascination hasn鈥檛 subsided the least bit.

Il nome originale del Colosseo era Anfiteatro Flavio. Il nome 鈥楥olosseo鈥 deriva dalla colossale statua dell'imperatore Nerone alta 41 metri detta 鈥楥olosso鈥 che un tempo vi si trovava accanto, e fu in seguito distrutta (猫 ancora visibile il basamento in tufo su cui un tempo era collocata la statua).
Il Colosseo fu completato nell'80 d.C., quando l'imperatore era Tito, ma prese il nome da suo padre Flavio Vespasiano, della dinastia Flavia, che ne ordin貌 la costruzione nel 72 d.C.
Ci vollero dunque solo otto anni per costruire quello che sarebbe diventato il pi霉 grande anfiteatro del mondo: di forma ovale, misurava 189 m di lunghezza, 156 m di larghezza e 48 m di altezza.
Ecco altri numeri sbalorditivi: il Colosseo poteva contenere 50.000 spettatori, aveva 80 ingressi e 80 file sugli spalti, dove le persone sedevano secondo la loro classe sociale: pi霉 vicino all'arena sedevano imperatori e senatori, poi i patrizi, e pi霉 lontano le classi pi霉 povere.
Gli spettacoli del Colosseo duravano tutto il giorno, e non si trattava solo di combattimenti di gladiatori. C'erano cacce agli animali selvatici, battaglie navali, esecuzioni pubbliche di criminali, giochi che ricordavano la mitologia classica.
I primi giochi tenuti al Colosseo, nell'80 d.C., durarono 100 giorni consecutivi; si dice che pi霉 di 9.000 animali siano stati uccisi durante questi giochi di apertura.
Il Colosseo fu utilizzato attivamente per quattro secoli; cominci貌 poi a cadere in disuso e, fino al XVIII掳 secolo, fu utilizzato come cava, per estrarre materiali da costruzione. Infatti, due terzi del Colosseo originale furono distrutti nel tempo. Tuttavia, il suo fascino non 猫 diminuito minimamente.
